Tourist Faces 8 Months for Stealing a Bike in Kuta

37-year-old French citizen Sammy Kevin Bensaïd Yousadja faces up to eight months in prison for stealing a scooter in Kuta. The incident occurred in March this year at the Bali Kuta Resort: the tourist found a key to a grey Yamaha Lexi, which belonged to another foreign guest, on the hotel premises and used it.

According to the prosecution, the key was first shown to Sammy at breakfast to check if it was his. Receiving a negative response, the administrator put the key away, but a few hours later, the Frenchman returned and asked for the key. Going down to the underground parking lot, the man found the matching scooter and drove off. About an hour later, he was arrested in North Denpasar.
During interrogation, the defendant stated that he was planning to go to Lombok to his child. The charges were qualified under Article 362 of the Indonesian Criminal Code ('theft'), indicating a breach of public order and damage to the vehicle owner.
The Denpasar District Court hearing took place on June 19. The prosecutor requested an eight-month prison sentence for the accused, noting his politeness and cooperation as mitigating circumstances. The court's decision is expected soon.
