Most often, criminals ride up on a motorcycle and try to grab a tourist's phone, bag, or jewelry. These incidents happen both on busy streets and quieter lanes, mainly when a person is distracted or not holding their belongings securely.
One such incident occurred in Jimbaran on September 7. A couple was riding a bike on Jalan Blong Keker when another motorcycle stopped nearby. The man at the wheel reached for their handlebars and snatched a phone from the holder. The couple tried to chase him, but he quickly disappeared. The incident was recorded on a street camera, and the footage was handed over to the police.
According to officers from the South Kuta precinct, a call was made to the hotline, and a duty team was dispatched to the scene. By the time they arrived, no one was there, and they couldn't contact the complainant. Nevertheless, the police continue to investigate.
Two days later, a similar incident occurred in Kuta. A tourist from Ireland and her mother were crossing the street on Jalan Kubu Anyar. A motorcycle approached them, the driver blocked the road, and reached for her chain. The jewelry did not break, but the woman lost her balance and fell. She sustained minor injuries.
The Kuta police specify that an official report has not yet been filed, but the investigation continues.
Police Advice
Kuta Police Chief, Commissioner Agus Rivayanto Diputra, emphasized that such cases remain isolated but require attention: — We urge both tourists and locals to stay alert. If you notice anything suspicious, call 110.
He also reminded of simple rules to help avoid unpleasant situations: – try not to keep valuables in plain sight, – don't use your phone while walking or riding a bike, – securely fasten bags and backpacks, especially when moving.
Enhanced patrols are on duty in Kuta and Jimbaran. Security is ensured not only by the police but also by volunteers from local communities. — We understand how important it is for tourists to feel at ease, — said the head of Kuta Traditional Village Ngurah Alit Ardana. — Therefore, safety is our priority.
Vacationing in Bali remains comfortable and safe. However, a little vigilance in an unfamiliar environment is always beneficial.
