South Denpasar operatives traced the suspect's route and detained him in West Denpasar a week later. As evidence, the motorcycle, the clothes he wore during the attack, and a pawnshop receipt were seized.
ALW confessed and stated that he sold the jewelry and spent the money on his child's school fees. He is charged under Article 362 of the Indonesian Criminal Code ('theft'); the maximum penalty is five years imprisonment.
The rise in pickpocketing and street thefts concerns the Bali authorities. Governor Wayan Koster has formed a special task force to combat banditry, focusing on the resort areas of Badung — Canggu, Uluwatu, Seminyak, Legian, Kuta, Jimbaran, and Nusa Dua, as well as Sanur, which is traditionally considered one of the most peaceful areas of the island.
