Police have arrested two men involved in stealing and selling stolen motorbikes from Bali to Lombok and Sumbawa. The suspects, Indonesian citizens AW (27 years old) and AM (44 years old), are in custody, while a third suspect is still at large and believed to be hiding in the city of Bima on Sumbawa.
AW stole a Yamaha Nmax belonging to an Indonesian military serviceman from a parking area near a minimarket on Raya Tuban Street on March 7. The owner reported the theft to the police, but it turned out that AW had hidden the bike nearby. One of the military officers managed to detain the suspect and handed him over to the police.
A search of AW’s rented accommodation in Denpasar led to the discovery of three more motorbikes — a Yamaha Nmax, a Honda Vario, and a Honda Beat — which are also believed to be stolen. Authorities also found 12 motorcycle keys from various brands, 13 fake registration documents (STNK), and 16 counterfeit license plates. The second suspect was arrested at the same location.
The gang admitted to stealing vehicles in the Denpasar and Badung areas for the past three months. During that time, they smuggled around 16 motorbikes through the Padang Bai port.
They sold Yamaha Nmax bikes for around 8 million rupiah and Honda Beats for around 2 million. The suspects purchased fake STNKs through online marketplaces and matched them with bikes that fit the registration data, which helped them avoid suspicion when transporting the vehicles to other islands.
The suspects now face up to five years in prison.
To protect your motorbike from theft, consider installing a tracker, locking the handlebars (especially in areas without parking attendants), and avoiding leaving your bike overnight in unsecured locations.
