Sumba Island Tops TimeOut’s Best Asian Destinations for 2025

TimeOut has unveiled its list of the eight best destinations to visit in Asia in 2025, with Sumba Island in Indonesia taking the top spot. Following closely are Siargao in the Philippines and Da Nang in Vietnam, while Tainan in Taiwan ranks fourth. The list also includes Ipoh in Malaysia, Osaka in Japan, Nan in Thailand, and Lijiang in China, rounding out the top eight.
Sumba is a magical island that can be traversed in just seven hours by car. It remains largely untouched by mass tourism, offering a serene escape and some of Indonesia’s finest surfing spots.
You might recognize Sumba for its most famous accommodation, NIHI Sumba, which ranks tenth on the 2024 list of the world’s 50 best hotels. The resort is known for its unique offering of horseback rides along its private beach. While staying at NIHI can cost upwards of $1,500 per night, Sumba also boasts a wide range of affordable hotels and luxury villas.
Sumba’s Natural and Cultural Gems
This remote island is renowned for its idyllic beaches, like Nihiwatu Beach, often hailed as the best beach in the world, as well as its breathtaking savanna-covered landscapes. It’s a haven for travelers seeking both adventure and tranquility. Key attractions include:
• Weekuri Lagoon
• Wairinding Hills
• Praijing Village, a treasure trove of Sumbanese culture.
Sumba’s charm lies in its stunning natural beauty, from white sandy beaches to green valleys and traditional villages. Visitors can witness ancient traditions and unique architecture, such as houses with towering roofs, and participate in cultural festivities like the vibrant Pasola, a thrilling horseback battle deeply rooted in local customs.
Pair Bali with Sumba for the Perfect Indonesian Getaway
For travelers planning a vacation in Bali in 2025, a two-week itinerary split between Bali and Sumba is highly recommended. Thanks to four daily flights between Denpasar and Tambolaka Airport (TMC) in Sumba, visiting has never been easier. However, since Tambolaka only accepts domestic flights, international travelers will need to return to Bali for their connecting flights home.
As more Bali enthusiasts become aware of the environmental impact of mass tourism in southern Bali, many are seeking untouched, authentic destinations—Sumba fits the bill perfectly.
With over 17,000 islands, the Indonesian Archipelago offers a kaleidoscope of natural and cultural diversity waiting to be explored. Beyond Bali, Sumba is the ultimate destination for those looking to experience the unspoiled beauty of Indonesia.
