Schoolchildren Join Beach Clean-Ups in Bali

Schoolchildren took to Bali's coast for cleanup: students in different areas of the island participated in the event alongside residents, police, and the military. The children collected litter by hand along the beach as part of environmental education and as a reminder that the issue affects all generations.

At the end of January, joint cleanups took place at Kuta Beach with participation from public and environmental services, the traditional community, and tourism business representatives (including beachfront hotels).
The reason for the increased attention was public criticism from Indonesia's President Prabowo Subianto. He stated that Bali looks dirty due to litter and directly suggested that regional authorities should involve schoolchildren in regular cleanups.
In response, Bali's governor Wayan Koster announced that an operational team would be created soon to be on duty along the coast and initiate cleanup immediately after litter washes ashore. Koster listed the participants: relevant provincial services, the regional emergency agency, the education department, as well as the army and police.
Separately, the governor again linked the situation to seasonal debris, which currents and runoff bring to the coast during the rainy season.
