If you’ve purchased a motorbike from a local owner in Bali, at some point you’ll need to renew the annual road tax. Riding with expired tax can lead to issues with traffic police, even though in practice enforcement is inconsistent.
The good news is that the renewal process is relatively straightforward—even if you don’t have a complete set of documents, which was my situation.

You do not need to visit a police office or any government institution directly, and the registered owner’s presence is not required.
The key document is the STNK (the yellowish-beige registration paper), specifically the expiration date indicated on it.
What you need:
- Original STNK
- Copy of the owner’s KTP (Indonesian ID) — optional, but recommended
The renewal cost is typically listed on the STNK, and in most cases, the amount remains similar year to year. There is no need to bring the motorbike itself.
Where to renew:
You’ll need to go through a local biro jasa (service bureau). These are small agencies that handle administrative tasks like tax payments. They are widely available across Bali.

One example is Biro Jasa Puri Gading in the Bukit area, but you can easily find similar offices nearby. If needed, you can ask locals: “di mana bayar pajak motor?” (where can I pay motorcycle tax?).
How it works:
Most of these offices operate in Indonesian only, so basic communication or simple phrases will help. In my case, it was enough to show the STNK and say “mau bayar pajak” (I want to pay the tax).
If you don’t have a copy of the KTP, the process can still go ahead, but there may be an additional fee (around IDR 100,000, though it varies). Simply explain that you don’t have it (“tidak ada”).

The staff will take your STNK and ask for an advance payment, usually close to the tax amount. They may request your WhatsApp number to confirm the final cost, although follow-up communication is not always reliable. It’s best to return on the date they give you or within a couple of days after.
Timeline:
In my case, the process took two working days (submitted Friday, collected Monday).
Additional notes:
I also ordered new license plates (plat nomor) through the same office for IDR 60,000. However, the quality was not great, so it may be worth exploring other options if that matters to you.
