The passenger was missing 18 million rupiah, and 15.8 million was found at the detained man's home in Kuta.
It happened on Friday, 2 October, at around half past seven in the evening in the domestic terminal. The 25-year-old passenger from East Java was carrying the money in a backpack with no lock on the zipper.
In the area where suitcases and bags are sorted before being loaded onto the plane, a camera filmed the porter at the belt opening the backpack, feeling through the contents and putting it back.
The porter was detained on Tuesday, 6 October. He is 31 and comes from Tabanan. During questioning he admitted that he had taken the money. Along with the cash, his airport staff pass was seized during the search.
The detained man is accused of theft, which under Indonesia's criminal code carries up to five years in prison. For now he is being held by the airport police.
A similar case occurred at Ngurah Rai in January 2023. Back then a 20-year-old porter was unloading luggage from a Super Air Jet flight from Bandung, felt a bundle of banknotes in the bottom pocket of another person's backpack and took 5 million rupiah.
