The man was driving a rented Daihatsu Rocky from Seminyak toward Canggu. While traveling along Jalan Mertasari in Kerobokan, he struck a scooter while attempting to overtake it, crossed into the opposite lane, and collided with an oncoming motorcycle.
The driver failed to stop. He then crashed into a car before hitting another motorcycle on Jalan Kedampang. Both riders and passengers were injured. The infant suffered a head abrasion. All seven victims were taken to hospitals in Denpasar and Badung.
Local residents chased the vehicle and managed to stop it in an alley off Jalan Batu Bidak VIII, where they detained the driver until police arrived. He has since been named a suspect and placed in custody.
According to preliminary findings, the driver had only recently arrived in Bali and may have fallen asleep at the wheel. He told investigators that he was unfamiliar with the area and panicked after the initial collision. Police are awaiting the results of a drug test. His international driving permit was valid.
He faces up to five years in prison for causing a traffic accident resulting in injuries and for leaving the scene of the crash.
