On the afternoon of July 4th, a rented Toyota Raize, driven by the tourists, suddenly braked and collided with a motorbike ridden by 21-year-old Deska Rio Aditi on Antasura Street in Denpasar. Instead of stopping to wait for the police, the tourists headed towards Ubud. According to witnesses, during the chase, the car hit several vehicles and damaged road infrastructure.
The chase lasted over 12 km and ended on the Ida Bagus Mantra Highway in the village of Ketewel (Sukawati). Locals blocked the car and handed the offenders over to the police at the 'Zebra Ketewel' post. The tourists were reluctant to leave the vehicle but were soon apprehended.
The offenders were identified as a man and a woman from the USA, temporarily residing at a hotel in Nusa Dua. Damages were estimated at 100 million rupiahs for the Toyota Raize and 300,000 rupiahs for the Honda Vario motorcycle. The tourists agreed to compensate for all the damages but remain under observation while their fate is decided by the immigration authorities.
This case didn't particularly surprise the police. Not long ago, a foreigner stole a truck and managed to drive it to the airport before being stopped.
