Bali Considers Tram Route from Kuta to Canggu

Kuta and Canggu could be connected by tram. The Badung Regency authorities have discussed the project with the management of state-owned railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI): part of the road space would be allocated for tracks, while the roads themselves are planned to be widened to up to 24 metres.

Officials have been looking for ways to ease congestion on the most traffic-clogged stretch in southern Bali for years.
Badung Regent Wayan Adi Arnawa believes rail would be more effective than expanding the road network. Toll roads remain a priority, but he says a rail connection would work better. He has promised dedicated lanes on all the regency’s main roads, with the same arrangement planned for Nusa Dua and Kuta Central Parking.
One hectare of land there will be allocated for a park-and-ride facility. Anyone arriving in their own vehicle will be required to leave it there and continue by tram. The authorities also hope to eliminate roadside parking along the road in Kuta so that traffic can flow more freely.
The project currently has no timeline, budget or exact route. The plan still needs to be worked out based on local conditions and actual traffic volumes. Meanwhile, roadworks are continuing across the regency: the Subak Sari–Umalas link in Tibubeneng is currently under construction, while the shortcut from Tibubeneng to Canggu is set to be extended towards Werdi Bhuwana.
A Gatot Subroto–Canggu–Mengwitani–Werdi Bhuwana corridor up to 30 metres wide is planned for 2027. The estimated cost is 3.2 trillion rupiah (around $180 million), with more than 2 trillion to be spent on land acquisition. An underpass of around 400 metres is being considered at Gatot Subroto to avoid relocating residents from a densely developed neighbourhood or affecting temples.
This is not the first time rail has been promised along this route. A groundbreaking ceremony for the underground Bali Subway was held at Kuta Central Parking in September 2024, but construction never began: the site remains empty, and in July 2026 the developer was only drilling to take soil samples before the design stage.
Earlier, at the beginning of 2023, Badung was planning a coastal tram line from the airport to Cemagi with a different partner, a state-owned train manufacturer. The regency promised to provide the land, while the company would cover the transport infrastructure investment.
