No More Free Parking Violations: Ubud Goes Digital

In Ubud, authorities have stepped up enforcement against roadside parking.

Drivers who leave their cars on the carriageway are now not only given warning stickers but also issued electronic fines via the ETLE system. The first such operation took place on 28 April on Jalan Raya Ubud, one of the busiest streets in the tourist centre. The operation involved the police, road services, the Gianyar regency transport office, and pecalang, Bali’s traditional community security force.
Before the checks began, during the briefing, Ubud Deputy Police Chief I Wayan Antariksawan asked the team to act calmly and not only penalise offenders, but also explain to drivers why parking on the carriageway makes traffic worse.
During the operation, inspectors checked vehicles parked along the road. Drivers who were present were spoken to, while some offenders received ETLE electronic fines, Indonesia’s system for recording traffic violations.
In total, the owners of 15 vehicles received electronic fines. Another 25 vehicles had warning stickers left on them.
In recent years, serious traffic jams have become more common in Ubud, especially at peak times and during the high season. Narrow streets cannot cope with the volume of cars and motorbikes, and parked vehicles slow traffic even further.
Ubud Police Chief I Wayan Putra Antara confirmed that congestion in the area is directly linked to drivers using the road shoulders and the carriageway as free parking. He said such operations will continue on a regular basis.
