Park Wrong, Lose Your Tires: Ubud Targets Illegal Parking

The issue of illegal parking in Ubud continues to escalate. The narrow streets of one of Bali's most popular tourist areas are already overloaded with vehicles, and cars parked along the roadsides only worsen the situation. Despite regular raids by the Gianyar Department of Transportation and police, chaotic parking remains a headache for the authorities.

On May 12, 2025, officials conducted another raid: cars and bikes once again filled the roadsides, blocking traffic. In response, authorities tightened measures — vehicles with violations are being towed, motorcycle tires deflated, and some faced the demonstrative overturning of bikes.
The head of the Gianyar Transportation Department, I Made Arianta, noted that road order is a joint task for authorities, local businesses, and drivers themselves. He urged business owners to provide their clients and employees with proper parking spaces to reduce congestion on the roads.
In the near future, authorities plan to involve the police and traditional guards — pecalang — more actively in raids and launch informational campaigns about the importance of adhering to parking rules. The safety, comfort, and appeal of Ubud as a tourist destination directly depend on road discipline.
A similar situation is developing in Denpasar. On April 30, 2025, a raid took place on Chargo Street, known for violations of truck parking regulations. Three drivers were fined for parking trucks in prohibited zones. Police emphasized that such violations not only cause traffic jams but also increase the risk of accidents.
Authorities promised to continue such raids both in Ubud and Denpasar, hoping that systematic work will lead to better driver discipline. Special attention is on owners of large vehicles, who are urged not to turn roadsides into spontaneous parking lots.
