Mr. ‘Forgot My Wallet’ Strikes Again: Foreign Scammer Caught in Canggu!

A captivating story unfolded in Bali, centering around 20-year-old Nicholas Ray from California. The young man was caught on surveillance cameras avoiding payment for services at several popular venues, such as Nude Bali and Shelter Pererenan. He repeatedly promised to return with money, claiming he had forgotten his wallet, but each time he disappeared without fulfilling his obligations. This situation quickly caused a stir on social media.
Local residents and expats joined forces to track down the culprit, leading to an island-wide hunt. On October 10th, Nicholas planned to flee Bali but didn’t make it in time. He was recognized by well-known comedian and blogger Christian Giacobbe, who spotted him near a currency exchange. Giacobbe filmed the encounter, confronting Nicholas and calling on him to publicly take responsibility for his actions.
Instead of boarding a plane, Nicholas found himself having discussions with the business owners to whom he owed money. He was forced to apologize to all the establishments he had left with unpaid bills and promised not only to make amends but to pay off all his debts in full. He admitted to feeling lost and confused but was grateful for the kindness of those around him, which helped him realize that his actions were wrong.
“We could have tolerated the loss of money from the unpaid bill, but what hurt the most was the insult to the community and the trouble and discord this person caused with his actions,” Nude Cafe posted on their page.
Local businesses like Nude CafeHair CangguCelebrity Ink Tattoo Canggu и Shelter Pererenan showed not only professionalism but also generosity by forgiving Nicholas. They got their money back, but their openness and compassion were commendable—they chose not to press charges.
Nicholas was truly lucky, as behavior like his could easily have resulted in deportation, as recently happened to a Dutch citizen. Nicholas’ case could have ended just as badly, if not for the kindness and understanding of the local community.
The lesson from this story is clear: respect for others and their hard work should be at the core of every action, especially in a foreign country. Don’t abuse the hospitality shown to you.
