Indonesia can easily become a place you want to stay in for the long haul — including after you retire.

Maybe you are weighing this option for yourself, or looking for a way to bring your parents here. Foreigners over the age of 55 can apply for the E33F retirement KITAS, which allows them to live in the country long term.
Here is who this type of permit suits, what requirements you have to meet, what you will need to apply, and how much it costs.
Who the retirement KITAS is for
The E33F is a one-year stay permit for Indonesia, available to foreigners aged 55 and over, and it can be extended.
Despite the name “retirement KITAS”, you do not have to prove official retiree status or that you receive a state pension. The main criteria are the applicant's age and financial means.
To apply, you need to show regular income or financial support of at least 3,000 USD per month. You will also need bank statements for the past three months with a balance of no less than 2,000 USD.
The E33F is issued through a sponsor, who submits the application via the eVisa portal.
If your spouse is not yet 55, they can apply separately for a family KITAS. The same option is available for children under the age of 18.
An alternative is the E33E, valid for up to five years and issued without a sponsor. The requirements are considerably higher: you must place at least 50,000 USD in your own account at an Indonesian state bank, and you also have to show income or financial support of at least 3,000 USD per month.
What you can and cannot do
The retirement KITAS lets you live in Indonesia, travel around the country, and enter and leave it as long as you hold a valid re-entry permit, as well as engage in permitted activities related to investment and business.
That said, the E33F is not intended for salaried employment with an Indonesian company. It also does not allow you to sell goods or services directly.
How the application process works
First, your age, financial documents, and compliance with the remaining requirements are checked. Then the document package is put together — this usually takes one to three weeks.
Once submitted, the official processing time is five working days, but in practice it is better to allow around seven to ten days.
If you apply from abroad, you must enter Indonesia within ninety days of approval. The KITAS is activated when you pass through immigration control. In some cases, biometrics will be required at an immigration office.
After you receive the KITAS, local registration documents, including the SKTT, are handled separately.
What documents you will need
The main package includes:
- passport;
- bank statements for the past three months;
- proof of income of at least 3,000 USD per month;
- insurance valid for at least one year;
- a housing rental agreement;
- photos and a short CV;
- a marriage or divorce certificate, if applicable;
- copies of the documents of two local employees hired for household work.
Foreign documents may need to be translated and legalized.

Extensions and the KITAP
The retirement KITAS is extended every year. The extension application is submitted during the final thirty days of the current permit's validity.
If you are planning to stay in Indonesia for the long term, the next step may be the KITAP — a permanent stay permit. After the required period of continuous residence, you can switch to a five-year KITAP and stop going through the extension procedure every year.
If you are considering a retirement KITAS for yourself or your parents, Legal Indonesia will help you check your documents, choose the right application route, and guide you through the whole process — from submitting the application to receiving your stay permit.
