The cashier called for help, and passersby and pecalang (traditional security service) immediately gave chase. A couple of hundred meters later, the tourist was apprehended: he lost his shirt while fleeing, and the money scattered near an overturned rental motorcycle. The bills were collected and returned to the money changer.
The detainee was handed over to the Kuta police. They reported it as theft, an interrogation is underway and camera footage is being reviewed. The offender faces up to five years in prison. The video of the chase has already gone viral on social media.
In July, a foreign couple with a child stole five packs of dates and a package of lychee worth 200 thousand rupiah from a store in Mengwi. The shortage was noticed later, but the cameras helped identify the culprits.
