Jatiluwih Rice Terraces in Bali, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is set to launch a new helipad in March 2025. The VIP helipad has already been constructed, and the testing phase, including trial landings, has been successfully completed.
Jatiluwih General Manager John Ketu Purna assured that the helipad will not impact the protected landscape or the terraces themselves.
“The helipad is located in Banjar Kesambi, away from the main terrace area, ensuring no negative effects on the environment.”

Discussions about building a helipad in Jatiluwih date back to 2019, but at the time, the project was rejected by Indonesia’s Ministry of Education and Culture. The original proposal aimed to place the helipad within the Jatiluwih Subak Zone, raising concerns that low-flying helicopters and construction could damage the ancient Subak irrigation system—a culturally significant water management method unique to Bali.
Now, with a new location approved, details remain unclear regarding how and when the helipad will be used and whether commercial helicopter tours will have access. Helicopter tours are becoming increasingly popular in Bali, with many companies offering affordable 20-minute flights over iconic landmarks such as Bukit Peninsula, Uluwatu beaches, Mount Batur, and the rice terraces of Ubud.
Jatiluwih Named One of the World’s Best Tourism Villages

In 2025, the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) recognized Jatiluwih Village as one of the world’s top tourist destinations. Visitor numbers are expected to rise significantly this year. Previously, Penglipuran Village received similar recognition and saw a surge in local and international tourists.
The Balinese government and local communities prioritize heritage conservation and environmental sustainability. Jatiluwih residents actively uphold the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana, which promotes harmony between people, nature, and spiritual elements.
