A 55-year-old Australian citizen has been detained in Bali after trying to leave Ngurah Rai Airport on a private jet. The man used fake documents and at one point hid in the jet’s toilet.

The incident took place at the airport’s southern VIP terminal. A CAPA JET private aircraft, registration number N917CJ, was due to fly from Denpasar to Maputo, the capital of Mozambique. There were three crew members and four foreign passengers on board.
Immigration officers found inconsistencies in the documents of one passenger, who presented a Brazilian passport. There was no record in the system of his entry into Indonesia or of a valid stay permit. As a result, the departure was delayed for further checks.
According to immigration officials, the passengers then returned to the aircraft without permission, while the crew began preparing for departure. Airport services stopped the plane and brought it back to the VIP terminal. During a search of the cabin, the man was found in the aircraft’s toilet.
It later emerged that the real person behind the fake identity was Australian citizen Angelo Pandeli. His details were a 100% match with Interpol’s international database.
Indonesian law enforcement agencies link Pandeli to international organised crime and an investigation into large-scale drug shipments to Australia. The operation involved Ngurah Rai Immigration, the Indonesian police criminal investigation department, customs, the Australian Federal Police, and the US Drug Enforcement Administration.
Australia’s ABC reports that Pandeli has already been deported to Australia. He has also been banned from entering Indonesia for life. The other passengers, the crew and the aircraft were detained while the checks were carried out.
