Bali Immigration reported that on 28 March a 45-year-old UK citizen identified by the initials S.L. was detained in the international terminal of Ngurah Rai Airport. According to the agency, he had arrived from Singapore. During passport control, the system flagged a match with an Interpol Red Notice, after which the man was stopped and handed over to the airport police.
The Briton was wanted in a money-laundering case. It was also reported that he is suspected of links to an international criminal network and of using shell companies.
A Red Notice is not an automatic international arrest warrant, but a wanted-person notice. It means one country asks others to locate a person and temporarily detain them for possible extradition.
The head of the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office, Bugié Kurniawan, said Bali will not become a safe haven for international fugitives. Immigration control at the airport is not only about checking passports and visas, but also part of the search system. The man was identified immediately on arrival, at the point of entry to the island.
