From 1 September, Garuda Indonesia is switching to a piece-based baggage system. Your ticket will state how many bags you may check in and how much each of them can weigh: two pieces of 23 kilograms each cannot be combined into a single suitcase of 46.
On domestic flights, economy class gets one piece of up to 23 kilograms, while business and first class get two pieces of 32 kilograms each. On international flights, economy is entitled to two pieces of 23 kilograms, and business and first class to the same two pieces of 32.
In terms of weight, the allowances have gone up: previously an economy ticket included 20 kilograms, and business and first class 30. But now the weight can only be spread across separate bags, and excess weight in one piece is not offset by another being under the limit.
The allowance is set by the date the ticket was issued. Tickets bought before 1 September travel under the old rules, even if the flight itself is later; if such a ticket is reissued after 1 September, it automatically moves to the new scheme. The exact figures are shown on the e-ticket itself.
Hand luggage stays the same — up to 7 kilograms plus one personal item: a bag, a laptop case, an umbrella or a jacket. An extra piece and excess weight are paid for separately, including at the check-in counter.
From Bali to Jakarta and other cities in Indonesia, economy class carries one suitcase; on international routes, two. Last year the low-cost carriers cut their allowances: Lion Air and Super Air Jet kept 10 kilograms of baggage in the ticket.
