Bali Police Seize Tourist’s Bike Over Noise and Dangerous Riding

A loud motorbike exhaust annoys everyone except the rider. In Bali, this kind of modification doesn’t just irritate people — it’s also an offence. In the Cemagi area, police detained a 24-year-old Ukrainian national, A.H., and his passenger, a 23-year-old Indonesian, A.R.B. The case began with a complaint from a 38-year-old Argentine national, J.P., who lives in Tibubeneng and, it seems, had finally had enough of this concert on wheels.
The incident happened on the evening of 22 March on the road towards Cemagi Beach in the Mengwi area. The men were riding a motorbike with a non-standard loud exhaust, driving dangerously and disturbing other road users. They turned it into something like street racing: noise, sudden manoeuvres, and complete disregard for anyone nearby.
After the complaint, officers from the Mengwi Police, together with Badung traffic police, were sent to the scene. The riders were stopped and fined on the spot, and the motorbike — fitted with a custom loud straight-pipe exhaust — was seized as evidence. It is now parked at Badung Police and will only be returned to its owners after the court hearing.
What is especially telling here is something else: the complaint was filed not by a local resident, but by another foreigner. Police also stressed that they will continue to deal firmly with such riders — whether they are locals or visitors.
In Indonesia, an unauthorised loud exhaust can be punished under Article 285(1) of the Road Traffic Law: a maximum fine of 250,000 rupiah or up to one month’s detention.
