A foreign tourist from Spain, 37-year-old Lopez Pino Ferran, tragically died while spearfishing near the village of Pemuteran in Buleleng.

The tourist went hunting with three friends from the beach Tanjung Bukit Ser on the morning of August 17. Before diving, he was warned not to dive deeper than five meters and to strictly follow the instructions. However, during the hunt, Ferran dove alone several times and ignored the advice.
By 1:00 PM, he was no longer visible on the surface. His friends tried to find him themselves — they searched the area by boat and dove again, but without success. Local residents, who were searching with scuba gear, found Ferran's body. He showed no signs of life.
“Presumably, the victim lost consciousness underwater due to a so-called blackout — a sudden shutdown caused by a lack of oxygen while diving,” explained police chief Herogkaka Commissioner I Made Deravi. The body was evacuated to the shore by locals and police officers.
This incident became another reminder of the risks associated with spearfishing and freediving. Even experienced swimmers can fall victim to blackouts underwater if they neglect safety rules. The island authorities remind tourists always to follow safety rules, never dive alone, and use the services of licensed instructors.
