Food delivery is taking to the skies in Bali.

A new trial allows orders placed through the Grab app to travel part of their journey by drone, potentially bypassing traffic congestion and difficult terrain.
The drones collect food from Café del Mar beach club in Canggu and transport it to Nuanu Creative City in Tabanan. The trial began on 5 October and is scheduled to run for three months. Flights are operated by SKYY Network using aircraft developed by A2Z Drone Delivery.

The service follows a hybrid delivery model. Drones handle part of the journey where road conditions may cause delays, while Grab couriers complete the final stretch to customers. The idea is not to replace delivery drivers but to make the process more efficient by combining air and ground transport.
The drones operate beyond the pilot’s visual line of sight, with their locations monitored in real time. Flights are coordinated with Indonesia’s Ministry of Transportation, Bali authorities and local village communities to ensure safe operations.
This is SKYY Network’s first project in Indonesia and its first venture into food delivery. The company says it operates Europe’s largest drone delivery network, where its aircraft are used to transport medical supplies.
For now, the project remains an experiment rather than a step towards an immediate large-scale launch. Over the next three months, the partners will assess the island’s infrastructure, customer convenience, flight safety and how effectively drones can work alongside conventional couriers.
The findings will help determine where drone delivery offers genuine advantages and where traditional transport remains the better option.
“We’re not trying to prove that drones are the future of everything. We want to understand where this technology really makes sense and how to use it responsibly,” said Lev Kroll, head of Nuanu.
