Bali Bans Mount Agung Climbs in Heavy Rain

The Bali Province Forestry and Environmental Protection Agency (KLH) has officially announced a ban on climbing Mount Agung in Karangasem due to extreme weather conditions. The directive was published in a circular letter numbered B.24.500.4.1/95/UPTD. KPHBT/DKLH 2025 regarding the prevention of climbing risks in adverse weather conditions. The ban is based on safety risk reports caused by heavy rains and storms at the crater summit of Mount Agung.
Additionally, accidents during climbs on Mount Agung have become more frequent. One of the most notable recent incidents was the tragic death of a tourist from South Korea. In all similar cases, climbers ascended the mountain alone and did not follow safety recommendations.
The acting head of the KLH Bali service, I Made Rentin, emphasized that climbers are urged to refrain from climbing during bad weather, such as heavy rain, strong winds, or other extreme conditions that could threaten their safety.
“We recommend that climbers avoid ascending Mount Agung during extreme weather to ensure their safety. If the weather is stable, climbing is possible with the assistance of experienced local guides who are familiar with the route and environmental conditions,” Rentin explained.
The KLH Bali service also highlighted its commitment to strictly enforcing this ban. “If any violations are found, we urge the public to report them through the website www.lapor.go.id, providing credible evidence,” Rentin stated.
What measures will be taken against violators remains unspecified. However, it is important to remember that the highest price to pay could be one’s health or even life.
