From 15 April, Indonesia AirAsia cancelled 11 flights a week from Singapore. On the Denpasar–Kuala Lumpur route, between 22 April and 1 May the number of flights is being reduced from 14 to 12 a week.
There is a separate change for AirAsia X on the Kuala Lumpur–Denpasar route. Flights that were due to start on 14 April have been postponed to 28 June. The airline plans to operate this route four times a week on an Airbus A330-300.
On the Jakarta–Denpasar route, the number of one-way flights has been reduced from 384 to 291.
AirAsia attributed the adjustments to rising operating costs, mainly higher jet fuel prices. The company said it is reviewing some routes and schedules to keep services running on routes with more stable load factors. Some cancellations will remain in place until the end of October.
According to the Indonesian Airlines Association, in April Pertamina’s jet fuel price rose by about 70% for domestic flights and about 80% for international flights. At Soekarno–Hatta Airport in Jakarta, the price per litre of fuel for domestic flights increased from 13,656.51 to 23,551.08 rupiah.
AirAsia X separately reported an average fare increase of 30–40% and a roughly 20% rise in the fuel surcharge. The carrier also said it is cutting capacity by around 10% amid rising jet fuel prices.
For passengers whose flights were affected, AirAsia is offering a change of travel date, credit to an account in the AirAsia MOVE app, or a refund. Flight status can be checked on the AirAsia website or in the airline’s app.
