The Bali provincial government is preparing a large-scale coordinated clean-up campaign targeting rubbish in the ocean and rivers. The campaign is set to start on 1 March 2026: clean-ups are planned across Bali at the same time, covering not only the coastline but also inland waterways.

Bali Governor Wayan Koster said the programme, “The ‘Bali Without Waste’ Movement in Rivers, the Ocean and on Beaches”, is being launched as a follow-up to instructions from President Prabowo Subianto announced at a nationwide meeting. The authorities say this should not be a one-off event, but long-term work that is repeated regularly.
They plan to involve regency and city administrations, the army and police, traditional communities, environmental groups and the public. The goal is stated plainly: to protect the marine ecosystem, keep beaches attractive and avoid damaging Bali’s image as a tourist destination.
As an example, the authorities point to Kuta Beach in Badung, where in certain seasons the amount of rubbish that washes ashore increases noticeably—especially in December and January. Against this backdrop, the province insists that cleaning should focus not only on the shore but also on the “sources” further up the chain—on land, in rivers and around lakes.
At the same meeting, besides waste, other “cleanliness and order” issues were discussed: tackling illegal banners and advertising structures, tidying up power cables and telecom lines, measures to reduce traffic jams, security issues, and monitoring the conversion of agricultural land for construction.
