An American man visiting a Starbucks in Bali’s Petitenget area wouldn’t normally raise any eyebrows—unless he stays there for several days. And that’s exactly what happened. A U.S. citizen turned the Starbucks into his personal hostel for four days. Eventually, concerned about his prolonged stay, the staff decided to call the police.
At 9 a.m. on Monday, after a brief conversation, officers detained the American, identified as James K. Police had already attempted to speak with him on Saturday, December 21, but he managed to flee. However, the next day, he casually returned to the café as if nothing had happened.
Starbucks employees reported that the foreigner even attempted to beg for money inside the café. The police have since contacted the U.S. Consulate and immigration authorities for assistance.
James was already known to locals for wandering and begging in the Simpang Leo Petitenget area. When questioned by police, he claimed that he ran out of money after his bank card was blocked. Authorities suspect that his behavior may be linked to mental health issues, possibly caused by depression and stress, rendering him temporarily incapacitated.
James had been staying at a hotel on Jalan Poppies in Kuta. Police later retrieved his belongings, including a bag, mobile phone, and other personal items, from his hotel room.
Bali, a paradise island for many, can sometimes take a toll in unexpected ways. Mental health crises among tourists are not uncommon. There have been several notable incidents, including a foreigner who stole a truck and drove it straight to the airport, a man wandering the streets naked, and a woman recently repatriated with the help of compassionate community members and immigration services.
