This document is issued to hotels that pass an inspection against 31 criteria, ranging from evacuation routes and security systems to procedures for guests in the event of an earthquake, tsunami, fire and other threats.
For an island with high seismic activity and dense tourist development, this is an important but still fairly modest result. There are 498 star-rated hotels on the island in total, meaning fewer than a quarter of them have a certificate. The highest number of certified hotels is in Badung Regency; there are also some in Denpasar and Karangasem. These include Grand Mirage Resort & Thalasso Bali, Tandjung Sari Hotel, Hotel Ibis Bali Kuta, Grand Mercure Seminyak and Anantara Uluwatu Bali Resort.
This kind of preparation is especially important for coastal areas. High-risk zones include Serangan, Sanur, Kuta, Tanjung Benoa and part of the Buleleng coastline. Chokorda Oka Artha Ardana Sukawati, head of the Bali branch of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association, noted that the number of certified properties is also growing slowly because this certification is still effectively voluntary: there is no mandatory requirement or penalties for not having a certificate.
