Pererenan is a reef break at a rivermouth in Canggu (the Canggu rivermouth), just north of Echo Beach. The bottom is rock and reef, like all the Canggu breaks; there's sand only closer to shore. The main wave is a quality right with barrels on the take-off and long walls for turns. The peak is small and the standard of surfing is high — the competition for waves is among the fiercest in Canggu. Not a place for beginners. Contests are held here regularly — in 2025 it hosted the Surf Fest Bali Ocean Week and the Earth Island Surf Fest.
The wave & conditions
The right is the main break, running 80+ metres along the reef toward shore. On a good swell it gives barrels on the take-off and powerful sections for turns. Sometimes it ends in a hollow closeout. The left is shorter, but steep and fast, especially on a south swell. On the inside of the left there's a shallow shelf — very dangerous there. It works only at mid–high tide: at low the lava shelf is exposed, and at high the wave slows down and goes shapeless — mid is the sweet spot. The optimal swell is 3–6 ft. Above about one and a half times overhead the wave starts breaking wider than the reef and closing out. On the same forecast it pounds harder than Batu Bolong — because of the bottom contour.
Along this same stretch of beach there's Carparks — the mellowest break around: a short right over rock and sand and a longer, closed-out left over rock and reef. The wave is the least defined, which is why it's less crowded — mostly beginners and intermediates.
Conditions & tips
The crowd is the main problem. It's always busy and the standard is high — the competition is fierce. Localism is pronounced. By midday the onshore comes up and ruins the wave — surf early in the morning. Get in through the channel south of the river. At high tide you can paddle out straight over the reef; at low, only through the sandy shorebreak, to avoid cutting yourself on the volcanic rock. After rain the water is polluted with runoff from the river — risk of infections.
Hazards: shallow sharp reef at low tide, crowds, water pollution
