Padma is one of Bali's best beach breaks, in front of Padma Resort, on the boundary of Kuta and Legian. Lefts and rights over sandbanks that reshape from swell to swell — which means the character of the peaks and the strength of the current can change from session to session. At head-high it's a quality, manoeuvrable wave for intermediate and advanced surfers. It barrels even on a relatively small swell with the right tide — and that's what sets Padma apart from neighbouring Kuta. On a big swell the right delivers powerful barrels. Despite sitting next to the tourist zone, the spot is serious — there's a constant strong northbound current here.
The wave & conditions
Padma is very tide-sensitive, and the optimal tide depends on the size of the swell. On a small swell you want mid-to-high tide — at low tide the wave closes out. As the swell builds to 1.5x overhead the spot transforms: at mid tide you get long walls for turns, and at low tide the right becomes heavy and barrelling — but that's for experienced surfers. At double overhead the wave stops working — nothing but closeouts. The waves here are consistently bigger and longer than on the main Kuta beach. Rule of thumb on size: if Kuta is 1 ft, Padma will be 2 ft, and Canggu 3 ft.
Conditions & tips
Padma's main hazard is a powerful rip that constantly pulls north. The current here is noticeably stronger than on the main Kuta beach — one reason there are few beginners at Padma. Padma is not a beginner spot: you need to be able to duck-dive and read currents. That said, for surfers who've outgrown Kuta, Padma is a great next step: the waves are longer and the walls are better for generating speed and turning. The best conditions are early morning, before the wind gets up. After midday the onshore usually picks up, though it sometimes drops again by evening. The lineup can get crowded. There are a lot of experienced Indonesian surfers out, and they're not always keen to share waves with visitors — worth bearing in mind when you pick a peak. The entry is from the beach by Padma Resort.
