Nunggalan is an isolated reef break on the southern shore of the Bukit Peninsula, in the same league as Nyang Nyang and Green Ball as spots with tricky access. White sand, turquoise water, dramatic green cliffs — one of the most beautiful places in Bali. The wave is short, powerful and fast. The spot works when everywhere else is small: it's swell-sensitive and works even on minimal energy. About 300 steps down the cliff and strong currents in the lineup cut out the crowd — there are usually few people in the water, or no one at all. That said, those who do surf here are often strong surfers, and you sometimes get an overdose of advanced riders in the lineup.
The wave & conditions
The right is the main wave: a powerful, steep take-off, usually enough for two turns, after which the wave closes out or backs off into deep water. The left is shorter — one turn and a closeout, good for airs and aggressive turns. The peak is unstable — waves stand up in different places, and long walls are rare. Best at head-high and below. Above overhead the wave starts to close out. A good reference: the spot works when Green Ball and Uluwatu are flat. The optimal tide is mid to high. Swell: S, SW.
Conditions & tips
The descent is about 300 steps down the cliff, slippery and narrow. The climb back up after a session is a serious test for the legs, especially after battling the current. You need a solid duck-dive: there's a constant strong current in the lineup that pushes you to the inside — paddle non-stop. The bottom is coral reef, and wipeouts risk cuts. The spot is considered more dangerous than Nyang Nyang 2: it's completely isolated, there's no infrastructure, and there are few people or none at all — if something happens, there's no one to expect help from. Bring water, a snack, reef booties and everything you need. Wind is critical: the southern shore is very exposed, and even a light breeze ruins the wave. The best conditions are a glassy morning in the wet season.
Hazards: strong currents, sharp reef, complete isolation, ~300 steps down and up the cliff
