Medewi is the longest left in Bali. A soft point break over a bottom of rounded boulders that, on a good swell, runs for 800 metres and more. The most remote spot from the south — two hours from Canggu, and about three back because of the trucks heading for the ferry to Java. A relaxed vibe, ideal for a couple of days' trip.
The wave & conditions
On the outside it's a calm, long wall. About 80% of the surfers in the lineup are on longboards. On a small to medium swell the wave is too fat for a shortboard without pumping. A shortboard works on a big swell. On a good groundswell the ride lasts 30–50 seconds. On the inside the wave is steeper and sharper, suited to a shortboard. The take-off is easy and the wave rolls slowly — a great place for those moving from beach breaks to reef spots. The swell here is usually smaller than at the Kuta spots. It works year-round, but in the dry season the wave is more powerful and cleaner. The headland partly shelters it from the southeast wind — the wave holds longer than at exposed spots.
Conditions & tips
You get in and out over rocks — ask the locals where to enter properly. You need to be able to make the turn on the wave: ride straight and you'll finish on the rocks on shore. Reef booties are essential, especially on your first sessions and at low water. At low tide the rocks are exposed, the wave loses quality and surfing gets dangerous. Come in the morning — the onshore usually kicks in by midday. There's pronounced localism in the lineup. The rules are explained with a smile, but a breach is taken seriously — you may be asked to leave the spot. Since February 2026 the Medewi Board Riders club has officially banned beginners from the main peak — beginners and soft-tops surf only on the inside, by the fishing boats. Medewi is one of the few spots in Bali where you can surf on Nyepi. The village of Medewi is tiny but comfortable to stay in — plenty of guesthouses and pleasant hotels, some with a view right onto the waves. There are pushers at every local hotel. For instructors there's Rizal (Google Maps: "Medewi surf lesson"), who works with his son. A lesson with board and video review is around 350,000 IDR for 2 hours.
