Hyatt Reef is a right-hand reef break about 2 kilometres off the Sanur shore — the longest paddle in Bali. From the beach the wave looks like a long, perfect right, but up close it's often a set of disconnected sections over ultra-shallow reef. On a good swell and high tide, though, Hyatt Reef lives up to expectations — a powerful right with barrels on the outside and long walls on the inside.

The wave & conditions

Three sections, each with its own character. The Outer Peak is the shallowest and most dangerous: fast, spitting barrels over razor-sharp coral, 100+ metres beyond the main pack. The Main Peak is the most predictable: steep take-offs, walls for turns, sections that barrel from time to time. The Inside Peak is softer and deeper, suited to intermediate surfers, but it's more crowded. Swell: S, SW, W — the spot wakes up in the wet season (November–March). High tide is essential — at mid and low you can do yourself serious damage on the reef. On a small swell, mid tide also works.
Wind is Hyatt Reef's main enemy: out in the open ocean, even a light breeze ruins the surface. Best conditions are a glassy dawn or sunset.

Conditions & tips

Boat only — from Pantai Mertasari. A paddle is unrealistic given the distance and the currents. Arrange for the boatman to wait for you in the channel — that's your safety net: if your leash snaps or you get injured, you won't swim 2 km back to shore. The lineup is usually uncrowded — the spot is too far out and too fickle for the masses. Localism is mild. The bottom is ultra-sharp coral, especially on the outside. Currents push you off your position — keep an eye on your line-up markers. This is a spot for experienced surfers with good ocean knowledge.
Hazards: razor-sharp shallow reef, 2 km offshore, strong currents, wind-dependent
