Among the seized animals were 1 live Burmese python, 89 live royal pythons, 104 live iguanas, and 8 dead iguanas. On January 29, Ngurah Rai Airport staff halted the smuggling: the animals were found in 19 bags and seized due to lack of documentation. The suspect, a Russian citizen with the initials O.S., was detained later — on February 8. He is currently being questioned, and witnesses are also being summoned.
Illegal transportation of protected animals (alive or dead), their parts, or products made from them could result in imprisonment for up to 10 years and a fine of up to 2 billion rupiahs. The Ministry of Forestry did not rule out that the case is linked to an organized international network.
