Illegal Turtle Smuggling Ring Busted in North Bali

Police in northern Bali have foiled an attempt to illegally trade green sea turtles. Twenty-one animals were found near Pegametan Beach in Buleleng. All the turtles were alive.
The investigation began after local residents reported suspicious activity on the coast. A 67-year-old man from the Seririt area was detained at the scene.

Investigators believe he received the turtles on the shore and stored them temporarily before they were handed over. According to police, the animals were brought from Madura and were then due to be collected for resale. Two more people are now being sought: the alleged supplier and a middleman.
Investigators are also looking into possible recipients in Buleleng and Denpasar. According to police, the detained man claims this was not the first time he had received such a shipment, but this statement is still being checked.
In addition to the 21 turtles, police seized a mobile phone that may have been used to communicate about the deal. The animals are expected to be released back into the sea.
The green sea turtle is a protected species in Indonesia. Illegal trade, possession or transport of these animals could carry a sentence of up to 15 years in prison and a fine.
