Losing your passport while on vacation is stressful, but not a disaster. Follow these steps to quickly address the issue and continue enjoying Bali.
It doesn’t matter how you lost it - whether it drowned in the ocean, was left in a hotel, or was stolen. The steps to follow remain the same:
1. Report it to the police
Go to the nearest police station and file a report. You will be given a certified copy of the report — keep it, as it will be needed at the embassy.
2. Contact your embassy
Call the consular section of your country, explain the situation, and make an appointment.
3. Prepare documents for the embassy
You will need the following for your appointment:
- Certified copy of the police report
- Two photos (3.5 × 4.5 cm)
- Internal passport or any other document verifying identity
4. Obtain a temporary document
The embassy will issue a temporary identity certificate that will allow you to return home. It has a limited validity period, so make sure to leave Indonesia before it expires.
5. Confirm your visa at the immigration office
With the documents from the police and the exit permit, visit the immigration office in Bali or Jakarta to avoid issues when crossing the border.
6. Contact your airline
Call the airline you have booked your ticket with and check what additional documents might be required for boarding.
7. Renew your passport upon returning home
Once back in your country, go to the passport office or consulate to apply for a new passport.
Tip for the future: Make copies of all important documents before your trip and keep them separately. This will make the recovery of documents much easier in an emergency.
Losing a passport is unfortunate, but it can be resolved quickly if you act calmly and systematically.
