What receipt should you take if you are fined on the road? Penalty receipts

Indonesia Traffic and Road Transport Law
At the numerous requests of our readers, we have made a partial translation of the current Law on Road Traffic and Road Transport of Indonesia (UNDANG-UNDANG REPUBLIK INDONESIA NOMOR 22 TAHUN 2009 TENTANG LALU LINTAS DAN ANGKUTAN JALAN).
We have translated only the articles that specify fines imposed on drivers of private motor vehicles and the articles they refer to.
The file is in the attachment. Save it to your phones and use it when needed.
What to do if you've been fined?
Lately, fines on the roads of Bali have increased. If you are stopped for a violation, they take your motorcycle documents and driving license (if you had one) and issue a colored ticket. And... what to do next? This is precisely what this ticket is about.
There are several tickets for traffic violations. Offending drivers are given either a blue or a red one. Such a ticket is called "surat tilang" in Indonesian.
The green ones are for the court archives, the yellow ones are for the police archives and the white ones are for the prosecutor's office archives.
So which receipt should you take - blue or red?
Blue receipt - surat tilang biru
An offender who acknowledges the unlawfulness of their actions can choose the blue ticket. It can be paid at the nearest bank branch. Immediately after that, you can go to the police officer who confiscated the registration documents of your vehicle and your license (if you had one) and retrieve them by presenting the payment receipt. The downside of this situation is that in this case, the maximum fine amount applicable to that violation may be imposed on you.
The red ticket is called "surat tilang merah" in Indonesian.
The offender can request the red ticket if they reject the police's accusation of the violation. In this case, the process will proceed to court. During the court hearing, it will be determined whether the violation occurred after reviewing the police testimonies.
The police determine the date of the court hearing, usually within 5-10 working days after the violation. In court, you are not obligated to pay the maximum fine amount. The judge determines the fine amount. For less serious violations (without victims), the actual fine typically ranges from 20% to 40% of the maximum. After paying the fine, you will receive all your documents back.
You do not need to attend the court session in person. No one will personally conduct a trial over you. You only need to go to the court building in Denpasar, approach the window labeled "Loket Tilang" from the street, submit the ticket, pay the fine, and within a few minutes, retrieve all your documents.
So, Neo, which ticket will you choose? Blue or red?
How is the fine receipt (surat tilang) issued?
When stopping a violator, the police officer must politely greet them, present their identification document, and explain to the driver the nature of the violation, which traffic law article was violated, and the amount payable as a fine.
On the surat tilang receipt, the police officer must write your name, age, date of the violation, court date, the violated article, and the fine amount.
Sometimes, police officers may claim that red tickets are out of stock. This is a trick. They should be available.
If you receive a fine receipt, you can check the amount on the website http://www.etilang.info/.
Enter the registration number at the bottom of your receipt. If the number is valid, you will see the date of the violation, vehicle type, number, and fine amount.
To pay the fine for the blue ticket, you can use BRI bank ATMs, BRI bank branches, or go to court on the date specified on the receipt.
Penalty amounts
ONCE AGAIN - IMPORTANT AMENDMENT - below are only the maximum possible penalty amounts. If you take the red receipt and pay it after the court, the amount of your fine will be MUCH LOWER. POSSIBLY EVEN SEVERAL TIMES LOWER.
In short - important information about penalties for violations of the Traffic Law of Indonesia No. 22/2009.
