A snorkeling boat carrying 11 tourists capsized off the coast of Nusa Penida. The boat, Sea Dragon 2, was operated by a captain named Komang Jun and two crew members.
One of the tourists, 39-year-old Australian Anna Maria, died. Two other Australians, Gabriel Khizhnyakov (29) and Chintamani Warrington (32), sustained burns from contact with the engines. They have already received the necessary medical treatment.
The boat was heading to the popular snorkeling spot Kelingking Point but encountered rough seas along the way. The captain attempted to turn the boat to avoid side waves, but an object got caught in the engine, making it difficult to steer. After being hit by several powerful waves, the boat capsized, throwing all passengers into the water.
Tourists and crew had to wait for help while clinging to the overturned speedboat. A nearby boat belonging to the same company arrived to rescue the survivors. It was during this rescue that Maria’s body was found in the water. The exact circumstances of her death are unclear, though it’s believed she was thrown overboard by the first wave impact. The capsized boat was towed back to Toyapakeh Port.
Recently, another boat on Nusa Penida caught fire. Fortunately, no one was injured, and the vessel resumed operations after minor repairs.
Earlier, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued a warning about potential high waves around Bali due to tropical cyclone 91S, which originated near Java.
