From 1 April 2026, Bali authorities will post staff at the Suwung landfill (TPA Suwung) to prevent organic waste from being brought in. This was announced by I Made Dwi Arbani, head of the Bali Forestry and Environment Agency. He said the checks are being introduced at the request of Indonesia’s Environment Minister, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq.
The landfill must stop accepting food waste and other biodegradable waste. Staff will ensure organic waste is no longer brought there.
The next step is the complete closure of Suwung. The authorities currently give 1 August 2026 as the date. After that, waste will have to be redistributed across existing sites and local treatment systems. Earlier, later dates were also mentioned, including November 2026.
For many years, Suwung remained the main landfill for Denpasar, Badung, and neighbouring areas. The authorities are now trying to sharply reduce the burden on it and speed up the shift to sorting, composting, and local recycling.
Pressure on the authorities increased after criticism from the Ministry of the Environment. The ministry had previously pointed to problems in how the landfill is run, including open dumping, and demanded faster reform of Bali’s waste management system.
