As of December 17, 2024, a new option for foreign tourists was introduced in Indonesia: a seven-day Visa on Arrival. This innovation is enshrined in the Regulation of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights No. 22/2023 and the subsequent order of the Immigration Department of 2025.

The cost of this visa is 250,000 rupiahs (approximately 16 USD). However, this visa comes with strict limitations. It can only be issued in the Riau Islands — Batam, Bintan, and several neighboring territories. The Riau Islands are an Indonesian archipelago right on the border with Singapore and Malaysia. Administratively, it is part of Indonesia, but geographically, the islands are closer to Malaysia and Singapore than to the „mainland“ Indonesia (Java, Bali).
The visa is valid for just one week, cannot be extended, and cannot be used for travel to Bali or other regions of Indonesia. Therefore, the seven-day VOA is primarily aimed at residents of Singapore and Malaysia, who often choose Batam or Bintan for short weekend getaways. For them, it is indeed a favorable option: fast, convenient, and cheaper than a standard visa.
For travelers headed to Bali, the conditions remain unchanged. The usual Visa on Arrival B1 (eVOA) for 30 days at 500,000 rupiahs is available, which can be extended for another month without leaving Indonesia. It can be obtained directly at the airport upon arrival or in advance through the e-VOA system.
