In the resort area of Nusa Dua, home to five-star hotels and international conferences, service dogs are now on duty. The state tourism development company InJourney (ITDC) introduced three Labrador Retrievers for patrolling and luggage checks. A German Shepherd will soon join them.

The manager of the tourist complex, I Made Agus Dwiatmika, said tourists have already shown trust in these patrols. The dogs are meant to enhance the sense of security for visitors and help security work more effectively.
From August 20 to September 2, 2025, 12 security guards in the resort area underwent a two-week training course to work with service dogs. They learned to understand the animals' behavior in detecting explosives and practiced scent training with real samples. The program included drill training and obedience exercises, conducted by two instructors from Bali's police canine unit.
Now the dogs will work with security at the entrances to Nusa Dua. Their task is to enhance the screening of people, luggage, and vehicles.
ITDC's Operations Director, Troy Reza Warokka, noted that this is about comprehensive strengthening. Besides service dogs, the company has increased the number of CCTV cameras, boosted the fire service, and expanded patrols.
“We want the team to be cohesive and professional, with equipment and resources at the level of world-class resorts,” he said.
Warokka emphasized that the security enhancement is not a reaction to recent protests in some provinces, but a regular practice. According to him, despite the actions, Bali remains a safe area.
Nusa Dua is one of the island's most 'premium' zones. It is concentrated with five-star hotels, the best beaches, and venues for MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions) business events. For this segment, security is not about image but survival. Any weakness in the system could be too costly.
As Warokka said: “Hotel occupancy remains stable. Our main concern is the confidence of businesses and tourists that Nusa Dua is safe and ready to host events of any level.”
The dogs in Nusa Dua have become an essential part of the system. Labrador Retrievers are known for their calm nature and high trainability, making them suitable for working in a tourist area. The German Shepherd will strengthen the team – this breed is stronger, more resilient, and excels in search activities.
