Sanur Authorities Check Drainage After Water Concerns

In Sanur, city services are inspecting a drainage pipe near Segara Ayu Beach after a video appeared on social media. The footage shows murky water coming up from under the sand and flowing towards the ocean. Social media posts described it as possible wastewater, but Denpasar authorities have not confirmed this.

Staff from the Denpasar Public Works Office, the municipal public order agency, representatives of the local village and volunteers involved in monitoring rivers and waterways visited the site. They dug up the sand at the spot where the water was seen flowing in the video and inspected the drainage system.
During the inspection, the water in the channel was clear and had no smell. The video may have shown rainwater rather than sewage, as it could have been sitting inside the drain for a long time. The beach outlet may have been blocked by sand, and after heavy rain the water pressure broke through the blockage and pushed out stagnant, murky water.
The authorities also note that the Segara Ayu Beach area is connected to the city’s DSDP domestic wastewater collection and treatment system, so this type of wastewater should be sent for treatment rather than into the beach drainage system.
The Public Works Office says it will continue monitoring the situation and will also check whether water from hotels, restaurants and other businesses near the coast is entering the stormwater network.
The Denpasar Public Works Office has already issued a preliminary conclusion. The dark water may be linked to food waste from small businesses in the area. Samples have been sent for laboratory analysis. If pollution is confirmed, the authorities say they will inspect connections to the city’s wastewater treatment system and stop any discharges into the drainage network.
