Restaurant Owner Kidnapped in Bali Over Crypto

When the first social media posts appeared claiming that the Russian-speaking owner of Hedonist restaurant in Uluwatu had gone missing, many Bali expats dismissed the story. It looked like another attention-grabbing marketing stunt or an aggressive promotional campaign.

Police have now confirmed that the case was neither a publicity stunt nor a misunderstanding—it was a violent kidnapping linked to an alleged attempt to steal cryptocurrency.
According to Bali Police, the victim, a 41-year-old Russian national identified as Artem I., was abducted on the evening of July 2 while riding home from his restaurant in South Kuta. At around 9:35 p.m., a black Nissan Serena reportedly blocked his scooter on a road between Uluwatu Street and Belimbing Pecatu.
The victim told investigators that two masked men wearing balaclavas jumped out of the vehicle, restrained him with plastic zip ties, covered his head with a bag and forced him into the minivan.
He was allegedly taken to an unknown two-storey house, where he was held captive for around 30 hours in what he described as a room resembling a prison cell. During that time, the kidnappers repeatedly assaulted him while demanding the password to his cryptocurrency accounts.
According to the victim, the attackers also took his mobile phone and used keys found in his scooter’s storage compartment to enter his villa in South Kuta. Their goal was reportedly to seize another phone containing access to his crypto wallets and empty his digital assets.
Investigators noted that CCTV cameras, electricity and Wi-Fi at the villa were not functioning at the time of the break-in. Police later determined that a faulty water pump had caused a short circuit shortly before the incident.

Kabar Bali Hits
The victim was released in the early hours of July 4. He was reportedly dumped on the side of Jalan Prabu Udayana in Jimbaran, near Udayana University Hospital. Despite his injuries, he managed to reach the emergency department on his own, where he received medical treatment.
Artem I. was reportedly well known within Bali’s cryptocurrency community. In addition to running a restaurant, he frequently attended and spoke at crypto-related conferences. Investigators believe his public profile may have made him a target.
Bali Police say the investigation is ongoing. Officers have already examined four separate locations, interviewed multiple witnesses and involved both forensic investigators and cybercrime specialists. Authorities are analysing mobile phone network data and tracing the route of the black Nissan Serena using cellular tower records.
Police spokesperson Ariasandy said investigators are determined to identify and arrest those responsible, urging anyone who may have seen the vehicle around the time of the kidnapping to contact police.
The case has also sent shockwaves through Bali’s large cryptocurrency community. Security experts increasingly advise crypto investors to keep a low public profile, strengthen digital security and avoid openly discussing their holdings or income.
This is not the first crypto-related violent crime reported on the island. In recent years, Bali has seen several high-profile cases involving kidnappings, robberies and extortion attempts targeting victims believed to hold significant cryptocurrency assets.
