Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has supported accelerating the new airport project in North Bali. The airport is proposed to be built on land in Kubutambahan, Buleleng Regency, using private investment. No start date has been announced yet. The construction is proposed to be financed entirely through private investment.
The news came just a week after a contradictory statement by Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi. He said the authorities were abandoning the idea of a new airport in Kubutambahan and would focus on expanding the existing Letkol Wisnu Airport in Gerokgak. It is planned to be used for private and charter flights, cargo transport, and emergency landings.
Prabowo has now heard a presentation on a different project: a new international airport capable of handling Boeing 777 and Airbus A380 aircraft. The president supported accelerating the project, but no construction order or approved schedule has yet been published.
It appears that the government still has not made a final decision. Buleleng Regent Nyoman Sutjidra urged people not to speculate on the issue and said the central government had not yet approved either the construction or the site for the new airport.
