Ubud Money Changer Caught Cheating Tourist in Viral Video

A scandal erupted in Ubud around a money changer on Tegallalang Street. A tourist brought 200 euros — four 50-euro notes — and by the exchange rate should have received Rp3,805,000. However, he was only given Rp2,805,000.

After counting the money in the car, he noticed the shortage and returned. It turned out that the money changer's owner had hidden a million rupiah in the desk drawer. After the tourist's driver demanded an explanation, the missing amount was eventually returned.
A video showing the money changer's owner deftly 'removing' part of the notes quickly went viral on social media. The owner was summoned to the Tegallalang police. Station Chief Ketut Wiwin Wirahadi confirmed: "We are aware of the situation. The money was returned to the tourist through his driver." The case did not go to court — the foreigner did not file an official complaint.
Such schemes still occur in Bali: the cashier demonstratively counts the bills but discreetly pulls one or two aside or 'removes' them with fingers. To avoid falling victim to scams, use only authorized money changers with valid licenses. They must have surveillance cameras and counting machines.
