In Kerobokan on Sunday morning, a section of Teuku Umar Barat street (Jalan Teuku Umar Barat) was closed to cars for three hours — the first time Bali has tried out the “Badung First Car Free Day” format.
The event took place on 30 August from six to nine in the morning. The stretch of road, about a kilometre long, was given over to pedestrians for the first time — nothing like it had been held in Badung Regency before.
While the street was free of cars, the regency’s environment and public amenities agency planted 200 tree saplings along it.
At the same time, the Puskesmas I North Kuta health centre offered free check-ups to anyone who wanted one, and local small business owners were allowed to sell their goods right on the closed-off stretch.
Three hours without traffic cut emissions and noise on the one street that was closed — and it was the regency’s environmental agency that organised the event. Separately, Badung officials outlined plans to upgrade the whole Teuku Umar Barat corridor as far as the junction with Petitenget: widening the pavements and reducing traffic in North Kuta.
