The Charities Aid Foundation annually seeks to answer a challenging question: which country has the most generous population? Despite the complexity, the answer shows a certain consistency. For the seventh consecutive year, Indonesia has topped the rankings, maintaining its position since surpassing another generous country, Myanmar, in 2017. About 9 out of 10 Indonesians donate money to charity, and 6 out of 10 volunteer their time for charitable activities.
Indonesia is followed by Kenya, with a score of 63, and Singapore in third place with 61. Both countries demonstrate significant contributions to humanitarian activities, reflecting the values of their citizens. Additionally, The Gambia and Nigeria, scoring 61 and 60 respectively, highlight the spirit of generosity in Africa, even amid challenging economic situations. The United States, known for its numerous philanthropists, ranks sixth with a score of 59.
This year, Malta made a remarkable debut in the top 10, scoring 54. This five-point increase from last year is largely attributed to a rise in donations. The full list, methodology, and other interesting survey findings can be found here.
The World Giving Index not only highlights the importance of generosity on a global scale but also serves as a reminder that, despite the relentless pursuit of wealth, we must remember those around us who are less fortunate. Notably, the rankings do not correlate with the wealth of a nation. For example, Kenya is listed alongside Singapore, Canada with Liberia, and Nigeria with the United States. This indicates that generosity isn’t exclusive to ultra-successful billionaires but can also come from ordinary people with kind hearts.
How does the organization assess this complex topic?
The survey includes three questions:
1. Have you donated money to charity?
2. Have you helped a stranger in need?
3. Have you volunteered your time for community projects without receiving payment?
This year, 145,700 people from 142 countries participated in the survey. Interestingly, the global level of generosity continues to rise, with the index currently at its highest level, comparable only to the pandemic years. According to the survey, 73% of the global population donated time, money, or helped a stranger this year.
The Charities Aid Foundation, which has been conducting this and other studies for over a century, is well-versed in its field. Its mission is to connect donors with charitable organizations worldwide.
