The people of Indonesia have been recognized as the most optimistic in the world. This was revealed by the Ipsos Predictions Survey 2025, which involved 23,721 participants from 33 countries. The survey highlights the most optimistic countries based on how their populations view the upcoming year 2025.
Respondents were asked to agree or disagree with the following statement: “I am optimistic and believe that 2025 will be better for me than 2024.” Overall, the majority of people (71%) believe that 2025 will be better than 2024. According to Ipsos, the level of optimism over the past decade has ranged from 75% to 80%. The number of people hoping the new year will surpass the previous one has increased by 15 percentage points.
Based on the results, Indonesia is the most optimistic country. A remarkable 90% of Indonesians view 2025 with great optimism. To understand why this is the case, other sections of the Ipsos Predictions Survey can be explored.
For example, an overwhelming majority of Indonesians believe that their physical and mental health will improve in 2025 (90% and 92%, respectively). Indonesians are also optimistic about technology and the economy. Seventy-four percent of Indonesians agreed (second only to China at 77%) that artificial intelligence will create new jobs in their country.
Looking at these results from an economic development perspective, it all comes down to cycles. Indonesia and other top-ranking countries are currently in a period of rapid growth. The economy is expanding quickly, household incomes are rising, and infrastructure is improving. When positive changes are happening visibly, it is much easier to believe in a brighter future. Conversely, the situation in other countries may be quite the opposite.
Japan was found to be the least optimistic country in the group. Sixty-three percent of Japanese respondents disagreed that 2025 will be better than 2024. Only 38% of Japanese believe their mental health will improve in 2025 (compared to 92% in Indonesia). Furthermore, just 28% of Japanese think the global economy will strengthen in 2025, significantly lower than the global average of 51%.
