Indonesian Driving Licenses are Valid in ASEAN Countries — But with Nuances

From June 1, 2025, the new model national licenses (SIM A and SIM C) are officially recognized in ASEAN countries: Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Laos, Cambodia, Brunei, Myanmar, and the Philippines. This was made possible thanks to the 1985 ASEAN agreement and the completion of road system integration.
What's changed?
The new license format contains the NIK instead of the old SIM number.
Pictograms added: a car for SIM A, a motorcycle for SIM C.
The transition began on July 1, 2024; old forms were used until depleted.
Now, the new licenses are accepted without issue in ASEAN countries.
Pay attention to:
• In Singapore, Indonesian licenses are valid for only 12 months from the entry date. After that, local licensing is required.
• In Malaysia, both national and international driving licenses are necessary.
Important: always carry the originals — license, passport, STNK — and follow local traffic rules.
