Indonesia to Auction 1.4 GHz Spectrum to Expand Affordable Internet in Bali

The Ministry of Communications and Digital Technology of Indonesia (Komdigi) plans to auction the 1.4 GHz frequency spectrum to provide affordable fixed broadband internet to Bali residents. The initiative will use Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) technology— a wireless alternative to fiber-optic internet that offers faster deployment without the need for physical cable installations in every home.
• Fixed broadband penetration remains low, with an average speed of 32.07 Mbps (according to Ookla.com, December 2024).
• Significant digital divide: Many homes have electricity but lack broadband access.
• Since 2021, broadband subscriber growth has stagnated, prompting the government to expand BWA services through the 1.4 GHz spectrum auction.
BWA: A Faster and More Flexible Alternative to Fiber
BWA offers faster and cheaper deployment than traditional fiber-optic networks, accelerating nationwide high-speed internet coverage.
What This Means for Bali Residents
• Easier broadband setup in rental homes—no need for cable installation.
• Less dependency on repair crews if issues arise.
• More flexibility when moving houses, potentially allowing users to transfer their internet contracts seamlessly.
This move could significantly improve internet access in Bali and across Indonesia, making fast and stable connections more widely available.
